Fly Fishing

Trout water in every direction

The Tuckasegee River passes within half a mile of the bottom of our road. Cherokee’s stocked and trophy waters are 15 minutes one way, the wild streams of the national park 25 minutes the other. Jackson County built the first fly-fishing trail in the United States here for a reason.

The Tuckasegee

The delayed-harvest section between Sylva and Dillsboro is big, wadeable and heavily stocked: catch-and-release, single-hook artificials only, from October 1 through the first Saturday in June (in fall 2026 the state has delayed its stocking to November after hatchery losses). It is the centerpiece of the Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail, 15 mapped spots across Jackson County and the first trail of its kind in the country.

Cherokee’s waters

The Eastern Band stocks about 30 miles of the Oconaluftee, Raven Fork, Soco Creek and their tributaries. You fish on a tribal permit sold online and in town; no state license is required. The 2.2-mile trophy section of Raven Fork is fly-fishing only, catch-and-release, with a separate permit, and it holds the biggest trout in the region.

Wild fish in the park

Inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park a North Carolina or Tennessee license is valid everywhere, single-hook artificials only. Deep Creek, Bradley Fork at Smokemont and the upper Oconaluftee are the close ones. Small, wild rainbows and browns; brook trout higher up.

Bring the club

Take a few rooms or all fifteen bedrooms: a commercial kitchen, a fire pit for the evening lies, and a patio where waders can dry. Rates for the Entire Lodge, 13-room, top-floor and Kress Suite rentals are on the Groups page.

Eat afterward

Dillsboro is the closest town to the delayed-harvest water: Haywood Smokehouse for lunch, Boots for a steak after.

Common questions

Do I need a fishing license in Cherokee, NC?

You need a tribal fishing permit from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians for waters on the Qualla Boundary, not a North Carolina license. A separate trophy permit covers the catch-and-release section of Raven Fork.

When is the Tuckasegee delayed-harvest season?

October 1 through the first Saturday in June: catch-and-release, single-hook artificial lures or flies only. Harvest under general regulations resumes the first Saturday in June.

Is there fishing near The Lodge at Smoky Cove?

Yes. The Tuckasegee River runs along US-74 within half a mile of the bottom of Smoky Cove Road. The nearest access points and the delayed-harvest water are around Dillsboro, about 7 miles away; Cherokee’s stocked waters are 10 miles.
